How much money do you need to go to Australia?

In short

Are you thinking about Australia? Here are the expenses you have to consider.

We want to say right away. Australia is on the other side of the world, it’s true, and to get there you need to have some savings.
But there are three advantages to consider when talking about costs:

  1. In Australia you’ll have many earning opportunities. Salaries are high and proportional to the cost of living. For example, the minimum pay for casual jobs exceeds 24 AUD per hour! 💰
  2. In Australia you are paid every week. Unlike in Italy, where people are paid monthly, here you receive your salary weekly. This means you can already have income at the end of your first week of work.
  3. The exchange rate is currently favorable. In recent years the Australian dollar has remained relatively low compared to the euro, giving a big advantage to those who decide to fly Down Under.

So you can see it as an initial investment: even with simple jobs you can recover the money you spent in a short time.

If you want to leave for Australia, these are the costs you should consider:

  • Flight ✈️
  • Visa 🛂
  • Accommodation 🏠
  • Insurance 🛡️
  • Study courses 📚
  • Initial expenses 💳💰

Now we’ll explain them to you.

Cost of a flight to Australia ✈️

Unless you decide to leave on a complete adventure, the easiest and fastest way to reach Australia is by plane. For this reason, the first expense to consider is the flight. Depending on the season and the number of stopovers, you can find one-way flights with good airlines between €550 and €1200.

Generally, we recommend booking your flight in advance to keep costs lower and avoid having more than one stopover (average travel time: 22–26 hours).

→ Is it possible to take a one-way flight to Australia?
Yes, it is. In theory, proof of an outbound flight from Australia is required only if you have a tourist visa, while with a Working Holiday Visa or Student Visa you are not required to have a return flight.

However, in some cases having a return ticket can be useful and may even help you save money. It depends on your needs. In any case, we can support you in making the right choice and finding the best flight through our partner agency Travel Australia.

Cost of an Australian visa 🛂

To enter Australia, a visa is always required. Visa costs can change from year to year depending on decisions made by the Department of Immigration. On average, we estimate about €400 for a Working Holiday Visa and about €1,200 for a Student Visa.
The tourist visa, on the other hand, is free.

→ Do I need to show that I have money in my bank account to obtain the visa?

Working Holiday Visa: Yes. Since April 2019, applicants must show that they have enough money to support their stay. At the end of the application you must attach a bank statement showing the equivalent of 5,000 AUD (about €3,200)and demonstrate that you have enough money to buy a flight out of the country (estimated total: about €3,800).
If you don’t have that amount in your account, you can have a guarantor (a parent or relative) who declares they will support you.

Student Visa: Not always. For student visas, it is not always necessary to provide a bank statement. In any case, if you rely on us, you don’t need to worry—we can give you all the advice and guidance you need, not only for the visa application, but also for the requirements.

→ Do I need to prove I have that money when I arrive in Australia?
No. You only need to show proof of funds when applying for the visa.

Cost of accommodation in Australia 🏠

Rent is one of the biggest expenses when living in Australia. The cost is not the same in every city and can vary depending on the season, neighborhood, and type of accommodation.

Our advice: book temporary accommodation for the first month. Once you arrive, you can look for a more permanent solution directly on site, often at a lower price and in an area that is more convenient for you based on your study or work location.

How much does the first month of accommodation cost?
Generally, a bed in a shared double room starts from about €650 per month. A single room can cost more. For this reason, especially at the beginning, we recommend making a few sacrifices and saving money while you search for a place that better suits your needs.

And don’t worry—depending on the destination you choose, we can help you book the right accommodation for you!

Cost of insurance in Australia 🛡️

If you go to Australia with a Student Visa, you must also consider the cost of health insurance, which is required to obtain the visa. For OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover), you should expect a cost starting from about €30 per month.

For those applying for a Working Holiday Visa, insurance is not mandatory because Medicare is already included and covers basic healthcare services. However, having additional insurance is always a good idea, since you’ll be on the other side of the world 😉

Thanks to our partnership with Chapka, one of the world’s leading providers specialized in travel insurance, all Go Study students receive a 5% discount on the base insurance rate.

In addition, Chapka has created Cap Working Holiday, a policy specifically designed for people leaving for a Working Holiday experience.

Cost of an English course in Australia 📚

Estimated cost: starting from €650 per month

Starting your Australian experience with an English course is a great idea. It will not only help you integrate better into your new country, but it will also give you the chance to build a network of contacts that can be useful both personally and professionally. You’ll make friends and find a job more easily.

But how much does an English course cost?
It depends on the school and the number of weeks you study. We can recommend excellent schools at a very reasonable price. Keep in mind that Go Study always guarantees the best price, and if you study with us, our services are free.

At a school with a great quality-price ratio, you usually pay around €650–€700 per month for a course of 20–23 hours per week—that’s less than €8 per hour, which is a very good price compared to English courses in Italy.

→ Can I study and work?
Yes, absolutely—and it’s actually what we recommend the most! Course schedules can usually be combined with many types of jobs, so you can work and study at the same time.

Remember that studying is always a great investment: the better your English level, the more job opportunities you’ll have and the better-paid jobs you’ll be able to find.

Cost of the first days in Australia 💰

We usually recommend having at least €2,000 available when you arrive in Australia. Thanks to the favorable exchange rate, this becomes a good amount once converted into Australian dollars, giving you enough margin while you search for your first job.

Also remember that salaries in Australia are paid weekly, so you could receive part of your first paycheck by the end of your first week of work.

To summarize, here are the main expenses you should consider if you want to go to Australia:

  • Flight: starting from €550, depending on the airline, travel period, and number of stopovers ✈️
  • Visa: between €400 and about €1,200, depending on the visa 🛂
  • Accommodation: starting from €650 per month for a shared double room 🏠
  • Insurance: free if you leave with a Working Holiday Visa. You can also take advantage of the Go Study discount if you want to add Chapka insurance for extra peace of mind 🛡️
  • Study courses: starting from €650 per month for an English course 📚
  • Initial expenses: we recommend leaving with around €2,000 in your bank account 💰
